Introducing the Collective: Meet Sarah!
Hi there, I’m Sarah!
I first got involved with Merakos in 2016. I had recently co-founded a community organization, Saule Connection, which focuses on resource sharing, textile upcycling, and community building events. I was in desperate pursuit of a giant Jenga set for my Car Free Day clothing swap booth and ventured to the world of Facebook for a solution.
Not even 5 minutes after my Hail Mary post on Bunz Vancouver, Selina (resident artist @ Merakos) replied enthusiastically, “I happen to have this oddly specific item,” and a beautiful connection followed. In exchange for an afternoon of chair painting, the Jenga provided the perfect gathering point for neighbours, families and strangers to meet, exchange, and connect while updating their wardrobe for free… the Saule Connection dream!
Since this initial chance encounter, Saule Connection has continued to work with Merakos and its community of movers and shakers to facilitate multiple events at Riley Park, all focused on zero waste, upcycling, and resource sharing while strengthening communities. From zero waste Christmas markets to clothing repair and pizza making parties, Merakos is the perfect space to experiment with new and innovative methods of sustainability and social engagement.
Regardless of their background, economic status, or perceived ability, everyone has something of value to contribute. This vision for a healthy community is a strongly shared value and throughout the years, I’m ever grateful to places like Merakos which serve as a hub for folks who want to make a social impact. Change starts in our own backyard.
